We are well educated. We live in the "information age". There is plently of information on the web and in the media these days about healthy living. But how do you know if this advice is actually going to benefit you personally?

Today, it is considered that 75% of ill health comes from factors that you can control yourself. Known as lifestyle factors, it is just a matter of understanding exactly which factors are affecting your health right now.

Have you purchased vitamin bottle after vitamin bottle and still not found the result you were looking for? Often the answer is not just one magic pill. Why?

Because your body is not a machine that you just switch on and off, or simply change a spark plug and it bursts back into life, as good as new. Instead, your body is a complex, living organism that runs many overlapping "self-healing" systems at the same time.

When your body is no longer working well, there are lots of "fine tunings" that must be done to restore balance and return you to good health.

"It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen…"when your body is given the opportunity to heal itself.

The key is in knowing exactly what you can do that will create the greatest improvement in the shortest possible time, that will last far into the future.

Finally, you can relax - because that’s what I’ve spent years training for. Based on my clinical experience, I know that there are many benefits that you will receive from a specially designed, personally targeted naturopathic health and wellness programme. Your programme will have many different facets that create building blocks to improving your health.

If you are in Rotorua, NZ and would like to come see me for an appointment, here are details of my clinic-based naturopathic programmes and packages.
There are two levels
1. Wellness is for helping you to make healthy food & lifestyle choices - and I’ll give you the reasons why you need to change!

2. Naturopathic Health Improvement Programme is to help you manage and overcome chronic or ongoing health issues.

Dec 23

When talking to people about keeping coughs and colds at bay, I find they get some things right and ignore the rest. So they say they have tried the natural way but it doesn’t work: It would if they knew exactly what to do - and why. Its all about working with the complex metabolic pathways of the body, so that your whole organism gets stronger all at once. I always belive in supporting the body as a whole - not the "one pill does it all" medical model thinking!

It is possible to shorten the duration and severity of nasty colds and flus just with a simple protocol - which I have listed below for your convenience.

This is a handout that I gave with a talk at a local community gathering a few years ago. And I have a client who tells me that she still keeps this list permanently on her fridge door to remind her what to do when she or her family feel ill.

Cold Treatment Protocol
1. Herbal medicine:

To help fight off the infection and boost the immune system. Depending on the symptoms, I will make you a personal  herbal formula that will not only help your body to fight back but will also support other aspects of your body’s defence. Take 5ml 4 times daily until finished.

2. Vitamin C , 1000mg .

Helps the tissues fight inflammation and pain. Take 1 dose 3 times daily for 2 days, then slowly tail off until finished. It is important that you ease back gradually because the infection can come back again if you suddenly stop.

 3. Antioxidant tablet with vitamins A & E plus zinc and selenium, all of which are nutrients that the body uses up during an illness or infection. Take 2 tablets per day.

4. Essential fatty acids: fish oils or flax seed oil or evening primrose oil. These strengthen the cell membranes against attack and help rebuild the body to restore good health. Take 1 tablet 3 times a day.

5. Winter Herbal Tea

Main ingredients were herbs (otherwise known as weeds) that I picked in our  local area - yarrow, cleavers, peppermint, lemon balm. Plus some dried echinace from my herbal supplier.

Put 1tsp in a teapot and pour over 3-4cups boiling water. Take 3-6 times daily.

Did You Know That Foods Can Be A Cure In Themselves?

Chicken broth is an old remedy that has been found to supply the body with some missing nutrients that help to overcome colds, coughs and flus.

Also cut out sugar, as it dramatically slows the ability of the infection-fighting white blood cells to multiply and get you better, sooner.

Eat light meals of fresh fruit, salads and light meats. The more highly coloured fruits and veges you have the better infection-fighting anti-oxidants they contain eg: purple (plums, berries, grapes), orange/red/yellow (carrots, tomatoes, lemons), dark green (spinach, mesclun leaves).

Replace caffeine with plenty of herb teas such as ginger & lemon, chamomile, peppermint.

Nature’s Nine Healers

By taking an active part in changing your own habits and lifestyle, you can contribute to permanent, positive change in your level of health and wellness.

1. Gentle sunlight (or warm your body in a hot bath or sauna)

2. Fresh air (but keep out of the cold)

3. Pure water (take 6-8 glasses)

4. Fresh food (eat lightly –fruit & soups- so that your body can recover)

5. Regular exercise (only once recovered)

6. Schedule some regular rest and recreation into your normal routines

7. STOP and rest up. Get adequate sleep (take your cold to bed and sleep it off)

8. Positive outlook

9. Balanced emotions
